July 15 – Howie Kendrick, a 15 year MLB veteran and 1 time World Series Champion is our first Random Player of the Day. What is this? It’s essentially our version of guys naming dudes. Every weekday we are
going to feature one random retired athlete, usually whoever pops into our head first. Today it’s Howie Kendrick, who knows who it will be tomorrow.
Kendrick, an All-Star in 2011, spent the first 9 seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Angels. He hit for an average of .292 with an OPS of .756. Never much of a power guy, his 18 homers in 2011 is his career high.
He was traded to the Dodgers for pitcher Andrew Heaney in December of 2014. His first season as a Dodger stuck to his career averages before regressing in 2016, where he put up some of the worst totals and metrics of his career to that point.
Kendrick signed with the Phillies prior to the 2017 before being traded to Washington midway through the campaign. As a Washington National, Kendrick bounced back and put up really solid numbers as a
bench bat/utility player.
He was a member of the first Nationals team to win a World Series in 2019, hitting .344 in 370 plate appearances that year. Kendrick famously hit the go-ahead home run against the Astros in game 7 of the World Series solidifying his place in Nationals franchise history.
Howie Kendrick was a solid player throughout his career. He played all over the diamond for a number of teams while being primarily a 2nd baseman and ended his career with the highest of highs in his penultimate season.
What a player and a great first random athlete of the day.
