College Football 2024 Week Zero: Top Storylines and Matchups

Top Storylines

College football is back in Dublin with some ACC action and a few FCS/Group of Five games round out this fun appetizer for the 2024 season. Not too much of interest to talk about this week, though New Mexico is in the unenviable position of being an 8-point underdog FBS team vs an FCS foe in Montana State. With all that said, let’s dive into Week Zero!

Top 25 Matchups

Rankings are from AP Poll (CFP Poll after release)

Saturday August 24:

12:00 PM

  • #10 Florida State vs Georgia Tech (Game in Dublin, Ireland), ESPN

Most Interesting Matchups

Florida State vs Georgia Tech: The only ranked team to play in Week Zero begins 2024 after a disappointing end to 2023. FSU should have the talent edge but with the Trans-Atlantic location and a conference rival on the docket, Georgia Tech could swing an early season surprise – don’t think that Seminoles fans have forgotten 2015’s shock ending.

SMU @ Nevada: SMU’s return to a power conference for the first time in almost 20 years kicks off with a primetime match in Reno. On paper this one isn’t too close, but favored teams have lost with better odds this early in the season, especially on the road.

FCS Game of the Week

Florida A&M vs Norfolk State (Game in Atlanta, GA), 8/24 7:30 PM

Two HBCU teams feature this week for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff in downtown Atlanta this Saturday at 7:30PM on ABC. It’s rare that FCS teams or HBCUs get a national primetime broadcast, so be sure to check this one out!

Selected Pick ATS

  • Florida State (-12) vs Georgia Tech
  • SMU (-26) vs Nevada
