College Football 2025 Week 9 Preview: Contender or Pretender?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The SEC still has half of the top five, the Big 12 keeps beating each other, and Ohio State is still dominating. Despite the old guard on top, a few new faces have taken advantage of 2025’s chaos – namely the historically irrelevant Indiana and Vanderbilt, as well as the eternal 8-win Texas A&M. Can one of these teams break the glass ceiling and cement themselves as a national champion? If so, now is the time to prove it.

Most Interesting Matchups

Texas A&M @ LSU: Is this the year for Texas A&M to shed their “little brother” team label? The Aggies are the top-ranked team in the SEC, but the Tigers are still a dangerous opponent, especially in Death Valley.

Missouri @ Vanderbilt: The winner of this matchup is a bona-fide playoff contender, much to the surprise of most of us. The Tigers have certainly looked better this season, but Diego Pavia and the Commodores are scrappy enough to hang with anyone.

Michigan @ Michigan State: Despite coming off a disappointing loss to USC, the Wolverines should certainly roll over a winless-in-conference Spartans team, right? If football in 2025 has taught me anything, should and will are two very different things.

Houston @ Arizona State: The Cougars are somehow still unranked despite a 6-1 start, and a win over the Sun Devils in Tempe could shoot them into national relevance. ASU is coming off a major upset over Texas Tech and certainly won’t make it easy for Houston this Saturday night.

Ole Miss @ Oklahoma: The Rebels saw their unbeaten streak come to an end against Georgia and face off against a Sooners team in a similar position after a loss to Texas two weeks ago. Which team can channel the disappointment of a ranked loss into a ranked conference win this week?

FCS Game of the Week

North Dakota State @ South Dakota State, 8PM, ESPNU

Number 1 faces off against Number 2 as the Jackrabbits and Bison clash for supremacy in the FCS. With the way that both of these teams are playing, we may see a rematch of this game in Nashville come January 5th.
